Jennifer Friedman :
Listening to Jennifer Friedman's You Are Creation might make you swear that somebody has secretly replaced her disc with a Joan Baez CD. This is especially true during "Play The Game," where Friedman's singing retains a distinctively Baez-ish vocal purity.

Like Baez, Friedman infuses her mostly folk music with plenty of progressive social lyrical thinking. Whether she's taking a shot at big business, as she does during "Play The Game," or bringing attention to spousal abuse, like with "Necessary Evil," Friedman consistently sings with purpose. Without a doubt, Friedman's songs are
filled to the brim with meaningful content.

Whiskey Bucket Blues Review

Henry Berry and Charlie Rossiter write the blues and publish music as The partners of Whiskey Bucket Music.  Their song stylings range from field hollers and road house front porch country blues rooted in the Mississippi Delta, on through to electric Chicago blues of the 1950's and beyond. Backed by Henry's slide guitar their performances have a raw edge seldom heard in today's world of highly polished,
studio-glazed music.  An evening with The Whiskey Bucket Blues Review is an energetic, song-filled listening experience.

Henry's style is influenced by legends like Son House and Charlie Patton. Charlie was among the handful of poets featured at the 2005 Chicago Blues Festival.  Their songs are scheduled to appear on albums by Chicago Blues singers Shirley Johnson and Nellie "Tiger" Travis in the not-too-distant future.  With a few exceptions to honor the masters, their performances focus on their original compositions.

In addition to performing in a clubs, coffeehouses, libraries, and festivals around the Chicago area, they also lead songwriting workshops and sometimes take their blues to the schools.

Saturday, January 6 - 10 pm
Pete Special : www.petespecial.net
$7.00, Blues

This full-throated, gut wrenching Southern Mississippi Blues, Soul and R & B from the man who founded Big Twist & the Mellow Fellows, played a stint with The Band, and has now formed a trio that's set to revolutionize the execution of Chicago Blues, will hit the spot like nothing before.

Upon Pete's return from an extensive tour of the U.K. where he played clubs with a trio featuring guitar, drums and harmonica, Pete approached Barnes with some sample tracks and asked if he'd like to produce the CD that would fully capture Pete's vision. Barnes got on board right away and the CD was recorded over the next few months. Both Barnes and Special categorize the recording as a progressive blues album. Pete's vocal styling and the musical arrangement also
lend themselves to folk music venues.

This latest venture is produced by Rick Barnes, owner of Wax Trax Studio in Chicago, Illinois. The CD features Pete Special on vocals and guitar.  Also featured is legendary harmonica player Corky Segal on several tracks. Adding to the mix on drums and percussion is top session player Jeff Thomas. Pete will be  performing solo featuring songs from his latest, Blue Telephone.

The Trollies:
Live alternative, blues, rock, folk, Celtic, funk, reggae progressive pop from Iowa City, IA!- Formed late 2000, Our lead instrument is a violin and mandolin, which is still unexpected these days in rock, blues, and pop music. Recently reunited after parting separate ways for close the four years, we are back with some new tunes
and the same old school Trollies vibe. "Local newcomers The Trollies convey a lilting, folk-rock approach on their debut disc, 'Fountain Pennies' but color all that with a sassy, blues-rock edge onstage. Spunky vocalist/guitarist Nikki Lunden sings
tough but pretty; Natalie Brown is a wonder on violin and mandolin, and the rhythm section of bassist Adam Grosso and drummer Seth Koenig anchors the passionate, original material. A band to watch." ---Jim Musser, Iowa City Press

SONiA and disappear fear : www.myspace.com/soniaanddisappearfear
                        Alternate Website : www.disappearfear.com
$10.00, Rock

Perhaps in a past life, SONiA was one of the original troubadours, a poet-musician roaming Europe in the 11th-13th centuries, singing songs of courtly love. She certainly is a contemporary troubadour, crooning folk songs about romantic love, often forbidden. This time around it's different; she's not talking about adultery, but
rather equality. SONiA has always spoken out against oppression, choosing to "love out loud" with all of the accompanying pains and passions. Jeep has recognized this.  They named SONiA the Troubadour-the featured artist-representing the
Mid-Atlantic region selected to travel around in the new Jeep Compass and perform not for the aristocracy but on street corners.  Not all of SONiA's travels have shared this lightness of purpose and being. Recently, SONiA spent two weeks in Israel-before and after the ceasefire-traveling mostly through central Israel, but also venturing to the south and then the north, 'where the bombs were.' "I have people that I love there.  I did a concert in a miklat, a bomb shelter. Some shoot bullets and missiles, what I put into the air is music.  When I named the band disappear fear, it wasn't a whim." This trip, sponsored by Orbitz, was SONiA's fourth trip to Israel and her third tour there, the previous two in 1999 and 2005.  Among her new projects, SONiA has written the soundtrack for the documentary Autumn Harvest. Directed by Dave Marshall, the short film chronicles the life of Douglas, a migrant worker who is HIV positive:  October 2006 release.  SONiA currently has two CD projects underway, a blues album that's coming along at the appropriate tempo for its genre, and a CD of songs in Spanish, Hebrew, and Arabic.

"Once every so often you find something that shapes your perception, influences your way of thinking and feeling...takes you to a whole new level of understanding the world. The greatest influence in this world is the truth and music is it's strongest form. SONiA's No Bomb Is Smart masterpiece of an album, expresses the brutal, terrifying, authentic, beautiful and real values of the world we live in. This album is truly magical, it evokes the bravery and wisdom of John Lennon and the musical genius of Joni Mitchell-do not overlook this album, it's better than any of the superficial, meaningless sounds out there on radio. Not sure where the world is?...not sure who the world is?... this album is the answer."   Ari Schwartz, The Rock and Roll Journal

Theatre Entropy announces a production of Lee Blessing's Two Rooms at the No Exit Cafe, 6970 N. Glenwood in Chicago on Friday, January 12 at 8:00 p.m. and running Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. through February 3.  Tickets are $15.00.  Patrons can reserve tickets in advance by calling 773.505.6766.

Somewhere in the Middle East an American professor is held hostage, blindfolded and alone in a cell. His wife Lainie waits for him at home in an oppressively barren room.  Written in the late '80s, this searing portrait of solitude and devotion rings eerily true to today's news.  As history repeats itself, Theatre Entropy takes the
opportunity to attack this psychodrama.  They not only explore the issues of bureaucratic red tape and media sensationalism, but more importantly, expose the sacrifice of the individual for the good of the whole.  All of this is told within the story of a husband and wife--ripped apart by circumstance--fighting to maintain their
connection half a world away.

Theatre Entropy is a non-profit ensemble of artists devoted to theatre that uses the stage as a catalyst for open discussion, provoking a re-examination of the existing social, cultural and political climate.  They believe that life is chaos; theatre is its measure.

Interviews can be arranged by request.  Photographs (either physical copies, digital files, or both) can be provided by request.
